Growing demands on resources and increasing complexity of issues require bridging traditional and untraditional boundaries to create powerful partnerships for social change.  Partnerships can be highly rewarding by providing new and ground-breaking solutions to existing problems, adding value to partners through increased credibility, access to new resources, enhanced skills and wider influence on policy. But partnerships can only achieve these things if we are ambitious and skilled enough. What does it take to build effective partnerships for lasting impact and meaningful improvements in communities? Can organizations rethink the opportunity to do partnering better, to raise the bar on partnerships?

In this session, participants learned from Jocelyne Daw, an Accredited Partnership Broker and Authorized Practitioner Trainer with the Partnership Brokers Association:

  • The need for intentionality, dedicated effort, time, patience to set up and manage partnerships. In partnership work, the partners and the partnership itself needs time and attention as well as the project that the partners are working on together.

  • The key attributes of effective partnerships and the different types of partnerships will be explored, and consideration will be given to how this impacts the establishment and management of a partnership.

  • The art and science of partnership will be introduced and investigated. Effective partnerships can be supported by taking a values-based approach and using the Partnership Cycle to guide the work.

  • The concept of skilled partnership brokers/bridge builder. Effective partnerships require a new form of collaborative leadership. Participants will consider how careful and thoughtful partner and partnership management can make all the difference in building an effective partnership.
