This Nonprofit Connections highlights CCVO’s latest publication Too Essential to Fail, highlighting new data on the current state of Alberta’s nonprofits. Policy Highlights

The State of the Alberta Early Learning and Child Care Sector
14 Months into the Pandemic

The Muttart Foundation

Alberta child care centres were among the hardest hit by the pandemic. They experienced significant falls in enrollment, service disruptions and rising service costs which destabilized centre finances and operations. Alberta child care centres relied heavily on federal funding support during the first year of the pandemic to meet their revenue shortfalls. They received less provincial support than centres in other regions, however, and were more likely to report financial difficulties than centres nationally.

The service and financial challenges many Alberta child care centres experienced during the first year of the pandemic suggest the need for new provincial investments to stabilize centre finances and operations as the focus shifts to early learning and care system building. Read the report here.

Nonprofits may need to spend about one-third of their budget on overhead to thrive – contradicting a rule of thumb for donors
Hala Altamimi & Qiaozhen Liu for Conversation Canada

Nonprofits that spend more on information technology, facilities, equipment, staff training, program development and fundraising tend to be more successful than those that scrimp on these"overhead expenses.“ But many donors are reluctant to support groups that spend heavily on those priorities because they associate high overhead costs with wasted money and bad management.

Because this problem is of concern to donors and charities alike, the authors of this post – two scholars of public administration – set out to identify the point beyond which spending more on overhead stops enhancing an organization’s operations. Read more →
