Nonprofit News: Difficult Conversations, Federal Data Working Group Budget Recommendations

Join Tomorrow's Webinar! I Need to Talk to You: The Art of Navigating Difficult Conversations

OCTOBER 4 | 12:00 - 1:00 PM | ZOOM

Many leaders avoid having difficult conversations at work and as a result, individual and team performance levels drop, customers and clients become dissatisfied, team morale plummets, and confidence in leadership is eroded.

Most leaders confess that they aren't comfortable having these conversations because they don't get enough practice doing it. So, instead of losing your cool, let's practice early proactive intervention.

In this webinar, Ken and Russell will discuss why leaders often avoid difficult conversations and watch two actors try to navigate a typical conversation. You’ll have the chance to offer feedback and explore the B.E.E.F. Model as a technique for structuring these conversations.

Nonprofit Federal Data Working Group Federal Budget 2023 Recommendations

With the deadline approaching for federal budget consultations, Imagine Canada has shared recommendations from the Nonprofit Federal Data Working Group to the federal pre-budget consultation process. They focus on collaboration between the sector and Statistics Canada, collecting more and better nonprofit sector data, and ensuring the data collected is presented in accessible formats. Read the submission to learn more about the group and their priorities. If the recommendations resonate, the group encourages you to adopt them into your own pre-budget submission or policy work. Read the recommendations on the Imagine Canada website

Imagine Canada has also created a simple pre-budget toolkit with instructions and templates to help you get involved and have your voice heard. Consultations are open until Saturday, October 8.

National Depression Screening Day 2022

The past couple of years have been difficult for everyone. Taking a few minutes to check on our mental health and encourage others to do the same, can make a big difference.

Every year, Calgary Counselling Centre runs an initiative called National Depression Screening Day (NDSD), a free public service to help raise awareness of depression and encourage those who need it to get help. This is done through a quick free and anonymous online depression screening test screens for depression symptoms from a computer or mobile device. It is available in English, French, Spanish, Punjabi, and Chinese.

The screening test does not attempt to offer a diagnosis, but lets participants know the presence or absence of depressive symptoms and offers a referral for further evaluation if needed.

The test is available from October 3 - 9 on the Calgary Counselling Centre website.

Structuring a Board in a Not-for-Profit
Guest Blogger Robin Butler, Baker Tilly Catalyst

Structuring a Board is a strategic and in-depth process. Many boards consist of professionals in other sectors or positions that serve on a board on a volunteer basis. Sometimes it can take a couple of attempts to create the perfect scenario.

A key element one should look for in a board member in a director position is that they have an understanding of the mission of the not-for-profit and are ready and willing to donate the time required. Many technical things, like governance practices, can be taught after the director has committed. When forming a board, it is beneficial to look for a variety of individuals with relevant background knowledge to guide the organization to success.
